Irish shoppers urged to scrap meat, fish, salads and vegetables over food safety fears as supermarkets issue recalls

Several recall notices have been issued in Ireland in recent weeks over food safety concerns.

So far this month, meat, fish, vegetables and salads have all been pulled from store shelves thanks to numerous warnings.

The items are sold in stores across the country, including smaller retailers and large supermarkets such as Lidl and Marks and Spencer.

The Irish Food Safety Authority has warned that people are at risk of contracting salmonella if they eat certain products, while others were found to contain metal parts.

Irish consumers are urged not to eat the recalled items.

Here are all the product recalls currently in effect:

Hao Hao Chicken Flavor Instant Noodles



A batch of Hao Hao chicken-flavored instant noodles has been recalled

A batch of Háo Háo chicken-flavored instant noodles is being recalled due to the presence of the unauthorized pesticide ethylene oxide.

This pesticide is not authorized for use in food sold in the EU.

Although consumption of the contaminated product does not pose an acute health risk, health problems may occur if ethylene oxide is consumed over a long period of time. Therefore, exposure to this substance should be minimized.

Recall notices at the point of sale will be displayed in the stores to which the concerned lot is supplied: SG B6; Consume before date: 09/18/2022.

A lot of Golden Lily dried apricot seeds is being recalled due to high levels of hydrocyanic acid (cyanide).

Cyanide poisoning can cause nausea, headaches, vertigo, agitation, insomnia, lethargy, nervousness, joint and muscle pain, and respiratory depression, among others.

The lots involved have a best before date of 28.02.2023.

A batch of Villani Cacciatore Italiano salami is being recalled due to the presence of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes .

Point of sale recall notices will be displayed in the stores to which the implicated lot is supplied.

People infected with Salmonella usually develop symptoms between 12 and 36 hours after infection, but this can vary between 6 and 72 hours.

The most common symptom is diarrhea, which can sometimes be bloody. Occasionally, the diarrhea can be severe enough to require hospitalization.

Other symptoms may include fever, headache, and abdominal cramps.

The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. The elderly, infants, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe illness.

Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection may include mild flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

In rare cases, the infection can be more serious, causing serious complications.

Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections, including pregnant women, infants, and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly.

The time between the initial infection and the appearance of the first symptoms is on average 3 weeks, but can range from 3 to 70 days.

Retailers are asked to recall the implicated lot from sale and display a recall notice at the point of sale in stores where the affected lot was sold.

Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated batch.

Marks & Spencer is recalling some products containing chicken due to the possible presence of Salmonella.

Point of sale recall notices will be displayed in stores to which the involved lots are supplied.

Green Box Limited Enoki Cendawan Mushroom

A batch of Green Box Limited Cendawan Enoki Mushroom is being recalled due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

Point of sale recall notices will be displayed in the stores to which the implicated lot is supplied.

Retailers are asked to recall the implicated lot from sale and display a recall notice at the point of sale in stores where the affected lot was sold.

Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated lot: Lot: 2022114640; Item code: C007

Gluten was detected in a lot of Just Free Gluten-Free Black Pudding, which is not declared on the label, and therefore the lot is being recalled.

This may make the affected lot unsafe for consumers who are allergic or intolerant to grains containing gluten.

As a precautionary measure, the previous batch of Gluten Free Just Free White Pudding is also being recalled.

Recall notices at the point of sale will be displayed in the Lidl stores supplied with the batches involved: 041-22; expiration date: 05/20/2022.

Jona Red Tilapia Fish

A frozen batch of red Jona tilapia is being recalled due to the presence of unauthorized substances malachite green and leucomalachite green.

Malachite green is an unapproved veterinary medicinal product that is not allowed in food in the EU. This substance can be broken down to form leucomalachite green.

Malachite green was previously used in some countries to treat parasites and fungal and bacterial infections.

Although it does not meet the Benchmark for Action, the fish in question does not pose an acute health risk, but may increase the risk if consumed over a long period of time.

The affected products have the batch number VN/472/IV/169 and best before date: 09/17/2023.
