EIGHT solar parks are to be built in Cork as part of a partnership between Bord Gáis Energy and Amarenco.
The farms will be among the first to produce large-scale solar power in Ireland, with Bord Gáis managing and extracting the electricity produced from the farms for inclusion in its supply portfolio.
When the project is complete, Bord Gáis Energy said it will supply renewable energy to more than 164,000 homes across the country, with Cork’s eight new farms providing enough energy to power 8,000 homes.
The project marks Amarenco’s first Irish solar farm construction.
“We are very pleased to announce this partnership with Bord Gáis Energy and are confident that all the green energy produced by our solar parks in Co Cork will be provided to Bord Gáis Energy customers across the country,” CEO of Amarenco Solar said. John Mullins.
“We hope this is the first of many such partnerships with Bord Gáis Energy in Ireland.
“We already have a successful partnership with Bord Gáis Energy’s parent company, Centrica, in Spain.”
Each of Cork’s eight solar parks will generate up to 5 MW of power.
Bord Gáis Energy recently announced partnerships with Neoen and Obton, powered by Shannon Energy, to manage more than 176 MW of power from 14 solar parks combined.
When added to Bord Gáis Energy’s current renewable portfolio, which exceeds 220 MW of wind production, the company will supply renewable energy to more than 164,000 homes across the country.
“Our ambition is to become a net-zero emissions business by 2045 and provide products, services and solutions to help our customers on their path to net-zero emissions,” said Bord Gáis Energy CEO Dave Kirwan.
“We are committed to supporting the growth of renewable energy in Ireland and over the last few years we have been building our portfolio to expand the renewable energy we can supply to our customers.
“Our partnership with Amarenco not only supports this ambition, but also contributes to decarbonizing the energy sector,” added Kirwan.
