INDIA, February 23, 2022 – India’s traditional PC market, which includes desktops, notebooks and workstations, had a strong year with shipment growth of 44.5% year over year (YoY) in 2021 (Jan-Dec) , according to new data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. While the notebook category was the volume driver with shipments reaching 11.6 million units, the desktop category, which saw a sharp decline in 2020, made a comeback with 30% year-over-year growth. This can be attributed to strong demand from corporate, SME and consumer segments.
The market remained bullish as vendors collectively shipped over 4 million PCs in 4Q21 (Oct-Dec). The demand for remote work coupled with better supplies were the drivers of the market. The desktop category continued its upward trajectory driven by demand in the Education and VLE segments, shipping over 800k units for the first time in 8 quarters. Laptops registered more than 3 million units for the second consecutive quarter. The Commercial segment posted strong YoY growth of 81.4% in 4Q21, while the Consumer segment saw more moderate YoY growth as suppliers focused on inventory correction after a very strong 3Q21 (Jul-Sep) .
“As schools and universities continued to operate remotely for the second year in a row, the demand for a computing device became extremely important to students. Some of the students who previously used smartphones/tablets for their virtual classes have opted for a PC for the obvious benefits such as a larger screen and ease of use,” said Bharath Shenoy, Senior Market Analyst, PC Devices, IDC India . Commenting on the current momentum in the notebook category, he adds: “The consumer segment saw strong growth despite facing supply disruptions throughout the year. While established brands managed to get better allocations and ship higher volumes of PCs, newer brands entering the Indian market in recent years struggled to get timely supplies, thus struggling to fully capitalize on the market opportunity.”
Top 5 Company Highlights – 2021
hp inc. continued to lead the overall PC market with a 31.5% share as its shipments grew 58.7% YoY in FY2021. The vendor also led the market and had its biggest quarter in 4Q21 by shipping more of 1.3 million units. The provider had a commanding 32.9% and 30% share of the commercial and consumer segments in 2021, as they grew 57.5% and 60.1% year-on-year, respectively. Strong demand coupled with steady supplies helped the brand manage substantial growth in both segments.
Dell Technologies secured second position with 23.6% share and 47% year-on-year growth in CY2021. The vendor also ranked second behind HP in 4Q21, shipping more than a million units for the second consecutive quarter. While it was a close second to HP in the business segment with a 29.8% share in 2021, it managed to stay ahead of Lenovo but came in a distant second in the consumer segment. The provider also led the enterprise segment with a 38% share, driven by higher demand from Indian IT/ITES customers and their global accounts.
lenovo it continued to occupy its third position behind Dell in 4Q21 and in CY2021 with shares of 17.4% and 18.4% respectively. While the supplier posted impressive 22.8% year-over-year growth in 2021 across all segments, limited supplies affected its overall shipments. However, it did well in the SME segment, coming in second behind HP with a 24.7% share.
Acer Group retained the fourth position with a market share of 8.2% in CY2021, while maintaining a share of 7.7% in 4Q21. As the desktop category made a comeback in 2021, Acer was one of the main beneficiaries due to its established commercial desktop business. The vendor ranked second in the commercial desktop category behind HP with a 25.8% share.
ASUS maintained the fifth position with a 4.4% share in 4Q21 and 5.9% in CY2021, as it grew 36.1% YoY in 2021. Although it achieved healthy growth in the consumer segment in 2021, it began to venture into the commercial segment, growing a staggering 227.2% year-on-year.
Commenting on the outlook, Navkendar Singh, Research Director, Client Devices, IDC India, said: “The market witnessed unprecedented demand for PCs in the last two years in both the business and consumer segments, but demand is expected to decline in 2022. While digitization and remote work are expected to be the main driver for the SME and enterprise segments, component shortages, supply challenges and rising prices could continue. negatively affecting the government and education segments, which would cause further project delays. We may also see some traction for newer providers in the consumer segment as supplies start to pick up in the second half of the year.”
