Public transport fares will be cut by up to 20% as part of a new package to help with the cost of living crisis.
The cost of tickets on Dublin Bus, LUAS, DART and rail services will be reduced in the coming weeks.
From Monday, online fares for Irish Rail intercity services, as well as Bus Eireann and TFI Local Link services, will be reduced by 20%.

Fares for Dublin Bus, Go-Ahead Ireland, Luas, DART & Commuter Rail and all other Iarnród Eireann services will also be reduced by up to 20% from May.
The reduction in fares will be in addition to the previously announced introduction of young adult fares as part of the 2022 budget, which will provide young people with an average 50% discount off the equivalent adult fares.

Dublin Bus

The short adult Leap fare, priced at €1.60, will be discounted by €1.30, allowing passengers to travel 2-3km less on all Dublin City bus services .

The introduction of the 90-minute adult Leap fare allows passengers to travel extensively across the Dublin City bus network, with the added benefit of a free onward transfer within 90 minutes of initial boarding. T he introduction of a 20% discount on all PSO fares means that this fare will drop to €2.00 in 2022, offering significant value for bus passengers.

New young adult fares will be introduced on all Dublin City bus services only on Leap, including one-off fares for short distance, 90 minute, Xpresso and Nitelink services. These are priced at approximately 50% of the equivalent adult rate. Additionally, these fares will also benefit from a 20% fare reduction in 2022, offering exceptionally good value for those passengers.

All single cash fares (including Xpresso and Nitelink) and prepaid period products (eg Ramblers and Visitor tickets) will also be discounted on average by 20%.
LUAS
- The short Leap fare for adults, priced at €1.60, will have a discount of €1.30, allowing passengers to travel between 2 and 3 km less on Luas services.
- The introduction of the 90-minute adult Leap fare allows passengers to travel extensively across the Luas network, with the added benefit of a free onward transfer within 90 minutes of initial boarding. As indicated in November 2021, this fee will return to the determined level of €2.50. However, the introduction of a 20% discount on all PSO fares means that this fare will drop to €2.00 in 2022, offering significant value for Luas passengers.
- New young adult fares will be introduced on all Leap-only Luas services, including a single fare for short-haul journeys and a 90-minute fare for longer, multi-leg journeys. These are priced at approximately 50% of the equivalent adult rate. Additionally, these fares will also benefit from the 20% fare reduction in 2022, offering exceptionally good value for passengers. The Young Adult Leap rate for 90 minutes will be €1.00, which offers very significant value to customers.
- The recently introduced Leap flat rate for children, which allows all children to travel anywhere on the Luas network with the added benefit of a free transfer to any mode within 90 minutes of initial activation, will be discounted by 80 cents to just 65 cents in 2022.
- All one-way, round-trip, and pre-paid cash product fares (eg, 1-, 7-, and 30-day tickets) will remain zonal tickets, but will also have an average 20% discount. All Luas add-on tickets will also benefit from the 20% fare reduction in 2022. Monthly and annual Luas products (including multi-operator tickets incorporating Luas) will also be discounted by 20% in 2022, offering an enhanced value for passengers who travel more frequently. These products can be purchased under the Taxsaver scheme, which offers significant savings for travellers.
Rail services operated by Irish Rail
- The short adult Leap fare, priced at €1.60, will be discounted by €1.30, allowing passengers to travel for less than 2km to 3km on all Dart and commuter rail services in the Dublin area.
- The introduction of the 90-minute adult Leap fare allows passengers to travel extensively on rail services within Dublin’s SHZ, with the added benefit of a free onward transfer within 90 minutes of initial boarding. As indicated in November 2021, this fee will return to the determined level of €2.50. However, the introduction of a 20% discount on all PSO fares means that this fare will drop to €2.00 in 2022, offering significant value for rail passengers. The 90-minute rate will continue to apply within the 90-minute rate limit (See Appendix M – Dublin 90-Minute Rate Limit).
- Existing zone 5 and 6 journeys remain in Dublin’s new fare structure for longer journeys, with associated fares also benefiting from the 20% fare reduction. Those who choose to purchase single zone 5 or 6 tickets on Leap will also be able to make free transfers within 90 minutes of initial activation.
- To maintain consistency across the Dublin SHZ, trips between Greystones and the city center (Pearse, Tara and Connolly) will be adjusted from zone 6 to zone 5, resulting in savings for passengers.
- New young adult fares will be introduced on all rail services on Dublin on Leap only, and are made up of single fares for short-distance, 90-minute, zone 5 and zone 6 journeys. These are priced at approximately 50% off the equivalent adult rate. Additionally, these fares will also benefit from a 20% fare reduction in 2022, offering exceptionally good value for passengers. - The recently introduced children’s flat Leap fare, which allows all children to travel anywhere on rail services within the SHZ with the added benefit of a free transfer to any mode within 90 minutes of initial boarding, will have a discount from 80 cents to only 65 cents in 2022.

- Mallow will be taken to the commuter rail fare area in Cork. This will see the addition of a new zone, with the introduction of Leap and cash fares to complement the existing ticket offering. This will mean that an adult will be able to travel from Mallow to any station within the commuter area for just €3.90 when paying with Leap.
- Cork commuters will also benefit from the introduction of young adult fares on Leap, with all fares reduced by 20% in 2022.
